The Funny Little Man | Roy Newby | Comic Artists | 1920s Artists

  • Artwave 2012
For three weekends this summer, an exhibition of giclee prints by Roy Newby will be on show at the Artwave festival, The House of Friendship, High Street, Lewes, East Sussex. Dates are August 25th and 26th, September 1st and 2nd and September 8th and 9th, 2012.
  • Phoenix Viewing
A selection of Roy Newby's images will be on show at the Phoenix Theatre & Studio, Phoenix Place, North Street, Lewes, BN7 2PQ, East Sussex. The exhibition starts on Friday November 25th (5.00 pm - 9.00 pm), goes on through Saturday November 26th (2.00 pm - 7.00 pm) and ends on Sunday November 27th (11.00 am - 4.00 pm). Entry is free.  For this exhibition, we've selected images which speak of the second half of the twentieth century in Roy Newby's work as an illustrator for the popular printed media. However, we've balanced these with others from the more private visual world he inhabited as a painter. Many images are wonderful time-capsules, bringing to the second decade of our own century a sudden, vivid recollection of the last. Others are timeless.
  • Vintage Festival
At the end of July 2011, to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Festival of Britain, the designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway (of Red or Dead) organised a massive Vintage Festival at London's South Bank Centre. Roy Newby's pictures were much in evidence: there in the Royal Festival Hall, thirty of his images, large and small, went on show. As a Londoner for nearly all his life, it was good to think that, in his ninety-ninth year, Roy Newby returned in style to London's South Bank!
